As the world marks the International Widows’ Day 2026, a non-governmental organisation, Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI), Abuja, has called for the recognition of widows strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions to their families, communities, and society.

Widow’s Day is an awareness day of the United Nations that is observed throughout the world to discuss the hardships that widows face when their husbands die.

Cecilia Kadiri, Communications Officer, Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI), Abuja, in a statement, said for the past 23 years, HSSI has remained committed to supporting vulnerable women, particularly widows, through sustainable empowerment programmes designed to restore dignity, build resilience, and create pathways to economic independence.

“What began as a modest intervention has grown into a far-reaching empowerment programme that has impacted hundreds of widows across the FCT, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Enugu, and Kaduna States. Through our nonprofit revolving loan scheme, skills acquisition programmes, financial literacy training, mentorship, and business support initiatives, we have helped widows establish and expand small businesses, improve household incomes, and become active contributors to their local economies.

“Today, our revolving loan scheme operates through more than 17 clusters across these states, providing widows with access to interest-free financial support and a community-based platform for mutual growth and accountability. We have witnessed remarkable stories of transformation as beneficiaries move from dependence to self-reliance, from despair to hope, and from vulnerability to empowerment”.

HSSI said many widows continue to face economic hardship, social exclusion, limited access to resources, and harmful cultural practices. “Addressing these challenges requires collective action from government, civil society organizations, development partners, faith-based institutions, and the private sector.

“At HSSI, we reaffirm our commitment to expanding our support programmes, strengthening financial inclusion opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, and advocating for policies that protect the rights and welfare of widows.

“To every widow, I want you to know that your strength is seen, your struggles are acknowledged, and your contributions are valued. Your resilience continues to inspire us, and we remain committed to standing with you as partners in building a future of dignity, opportunity, and hope.

“Together, we can create communities where every widow has the opportunity not only to survive but to thrive,” the statement said.
